Allegri Ensemble and Hobart Chamber Orchestra: And on Earth, Peace
7 September @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

The combined forces of Hobart Chamber Orchestra and Allegri Ensemble present a spellbinding concert of contrasting images and moods.
We begin with the impressionistic Sea Sketches (1944) by Welsh composer Grace Williams, depicting the ocean’s fleeting and capricious tempers over five short movements. In the heart of the program lies another rare treat – the Australian premiere of Tõnu Kõrvits’ darkly ethereal Moorland Elegies (2015). This astounding work for strings and choir sets poems by Emily Brontë in a suite of enchanting mood pieces which evoke the power of light and dark both in nature and in human experience. In the concert’s second half we match these rich moods with the joyous effervescence of Vivaldi’s famous Gloria. The Gloria has seen some three centuries of popularity for its infectious rhythms, beautiful melodies, and its ability always to draw smiles from audience and performers alike.
