Queensland Theatre: Calamity Jane
27 March @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST

First seen at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre Co in 2107, Richard Carroll’s inspired, side-splitting production, starring Virginia Gay in the title role, proved an enormous hit. Reviewing it for Limelight, Clive Paget wrote, “this tiny jewel of a production hits every note square between the eyes.” Naomi Price now steps into the role of Calamity Jane, the wildest woman in the Wild West, for QT. Laura Bunting and Anthony Gooley, who performed in the original Hayes production, reprise the roles of Katie Brown/Flo and Wild Bill Hickok.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Welcome to the rough-and-tumble town of Deadwood, where swaggering sharpshooter Calamity Jane is mocked and admired in equal measure. Deadly with a whip or a quip, her bluster and bravado mask a longing for something deeper.
Cabaret daredevil Naomi Price (Drizzle Boy, Ladies in Black) slips into Jane’s trail-worn boots for this rootin’ tootin’ unruly and unpredictable ride.
Join Calamity’s piano-fuelled posse and pull up a stool at one of the on-stage saloon tables to be part of the action!
This revival has all your favourite numbers, including “Secret Love” and “The Black Hills of Dakota” but this ain’t Doris Day’s Calamity Jane, no siree. This stripped-back reimagining shucks off the buckskin and brings a barrelful of dirt and grit to the classic musical.
