Held over the Easter weekend and curated by pianist Andrea Lam, this concert series brings together violinists Andrew Haveron and Alexandra Osborne, violist Tobias Breider, cellist Mihai Marica, clarinettist Dean Newcomb and tenor Andrew Goodwin. Opening with Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, the program also includes Schubert’s Winterreise; a celebration of love featuring works by Chopin, Gershwin, Janáček, the Schumanns and Caroline Shaw; and a concert that combines JS Bach’s Chorales with Arvo Pärt’s Fratres and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

Our opening concert, Gathering, brings together all our artists to welcome you into this weekend of music. Few things are as beautiful or satisfying as a string quartet, and we begin with Haydn, affectionately known as the “Father of the String Quartet.” His witty, inimitable voice established the form’s structural and musical hallmarks.

Schumann’s music is intensely personal and Fantasiestücke reflect his sudden shifts in mood, from dark to light, introspection to brilliance. Tosti’s light-hearted songs transport us to the Belle Époque, while Amy Beach’s magnificent Piano Quintet—lush with late-Romantic lyricism—showcases the triumph of her artistry despite societal limitations.
