Tempo Rubato: Resonate and Ring
12 September @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm AEST

A rare chance to hear some of the fascinating chamber works for baryton live, performed with their intended instrumentation. The magnificent baryton, similar to a bass viol but with an extra course of metal sympathetic strings, was an extraordinary instrument much favoured by Haydn’s longtime employer, Prince Esterhazy. Haydn composed over 130 works for it, the majority of which take the form of Divertimenti for this combination – the so-called ‘Baryton Trios’; in which the baryton plays a critical role.
They are full of invention, wit and colour, with the unique combination of low instruments creating unique and beautiful sonority. Hear music by Haydn and his colleague Burgksteiner; alongside two premieres – by Brooke Green and by the trio’s own Laura and Katie.
