State Opera South Australia: The Magic Flute
6 September @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

A new creative partnership with Hong Kong Opera and the Beijing Music Festival opens with a Mozart classic. Staged by film, theatre and opera director Shuang Zou and designed by Dan Potra, it fuses one of the finest scores from Classical-era Vienna with the modern visual culture of the Asia-Pacific to create a multiverse where the subway is a portal to different worlds. Nicholas Jones stars as Tamino, the handsome prince sent by the Queen of the Night (Danielle Bavli) to rescue her daughter, the princess Pamina (Sofia Troncoso), from the supposedly wicked Sarastro (Teddy Tahu Rhodes). David Greco co-stars as Papageno, now a fast-food delivery man. Dane Lam conducts.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
State Opera South Australia is proud to present the Australian premiere of its must-see bold new production of Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute.
The Magic Flute is a timeless tale that follows Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina on a quest filled with magical trials and moments of profound self-discovery. Guided by courage, love and a magical flute, they navigate a world of fire and water, silence and temptation — where nothing is as it seems and everything is at stake. Through soaring music and symbolic storytelling, the opera explores the balance between chaos and order, emotion and reason, reminding us that love, wisdom and inner strength can lead us from darkness into the light
