Allan Clayton, one of the finest tenors on the world stage, returns for a substantial national tour of Winterreise. Lindy Hume’s evocative staging, titled A Winter’s Tale, imagines Schubert’s increasingly disillusioned wanderer trekking through a desolate landscape made up of Fred Williams’ paintings of Australia and brought to life by videographer David Bergman. Franz Schubert’s last song cycle, A Winter’s Journey, sets the poems of Wilhelm Müller as a landscape of emotions from loneliness to courage. Roadside features – a linden tree, an icy river, a malevolent crow – become characters in the drama, triggering old memories and new hope.
