The 2017 Broadway musical, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Terrence McNally, is based on the much-loved 1997 animated film. It centres on the mystery surrounding the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna who was rumoured to have escaped (since disproved) when the Russian Imperial family was executed. Anya, a young woman with amnesia, hopes to trace her past when she joins two conmen who plan to take advantage of her resemblance to Anastasia. Georgina Hopson plays the title role alongside a cast that includes Rhonda Burchmore, Rodney Dobson, Nancye Hayes, Joshua Robson and Robert Tripolino. Despite a few holes in the plotline, there are some lovely songs and entertaining scenes. When the show opened in Melbourne, critics didn’t love it, but audiences flocked. After its current Perth season, the musical heads to Sydney and Adelaide.
