Event Series: ART

State Theatre Company South Australia: ART

24 May @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm ACST

Since premiering in 1994, Yasmina Reza’s play ART has attracted a roll call of big-name actors. Now Damon Herriman, Richard Roxburgh and Toby Schmitz star in a new production directed by Lee Lewis. Serge has bought a white-on-white minimalist painting by a fashionable artist. His good friend Marc is outraged that he would spend so much money on a canvas he considers to be “a piece of shit”, while the hapless Yvan tries to placate them both and gets caught in the middle. Running 90 minutes, the smart comedy skewers male friendship and insecurity, with huge laughs along the way.

Limelight Editor’s Choice

Richard Roxburgh, Damon Herriman and Toby Schmitz star together in the internationally award-winning play ART by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton. A razor-sharp comedy about friendship, ego and the chaos a single opinion can cause.

When one friend buys a ridiculously expensive painting, the others don’t just question his taste — they question everything.
Egos flare. Old wounds resurface. And a decades-long friendship begins to fracture.

With biting wit and pitch-perfect timing, ART explores how the smallest things, especially the unspoken ones, can spiral into something much bigger.

This 90-minute modern classic is clever, stylish and asks: can we truly see and still forgive the people we’ve known the longest?

Because everyone’s a critic. Especially your friends.
