The critics may not have been entirely enamoured when Beetlejuice The Musical opened on Broadway in 2019, but the audience begged to differ and turned up in droves, often in cosplay. Based on Tim Burton’s 1988 cult comedy-horror film, Beetlejuice features music and lyrics by Australia’s own Eddie Perfect – who is playing the titular deranged poltergeist in the Australian premiere, now running in Melbourne. Karis Oka plays Lydia Deetz, the unusual teenager obsessed with death and the afterlife, around whom the musical centres. Alex Timbers directs.
