Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bernstein, Gershwin and Chindamo
15 April @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm AEST
Get your gang together and pop on your dance shoes for this concert featuring a unique work for trombone and orchestra composed by Joe Chindamo alongside enduring American favourites. You’ll be tapping your toes all the way home.
Jonathon Ramsay – currently Principal Trombone at the Berlin Philharmonic – brings to life Joe Chindamo’s Ligeia. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, Chindamo explores psychological duality in this wildly virtuosic meditation on the macabre.
Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and adapted by Stephen Sondheim, Bernstein’s score to West Side Story is hailed as one of the most brilliant achievements in musical theatre history.
You might be familiar with the movie-musical An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. It was this orchestral work by Gershwin that inspired Hollywood producers and prompted the development of a blockbuster.
