Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Rachmaninov and Dvořák
29 June @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST
Joined by dazzling Belgian pianist Denis Kozhukhin, Jaime Martín conducts the MSO in this uplifting program of musical treats, including a lively operatic overture, Rachmaninov’s enduringly popular Second Piano Concerto, and a sparkling symphony from Dvořák.
The Overture to Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila is the epitome of orchestral curtain-raisers, with a furiously fast and infectious opening and rollicking good fun throughout.
Rachmaninov’s vibrant piano writing is set against the full warmth and richness of the orchestra in this musical delight of lyrical melodies, turbulent swells, and elegant charm. It is no wonder this continues to be one of Rachmaninov’s most popular works with audiences.
Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony is, simply, a joy. The music has a natural, unforced quality that belies its complexity, and layers of truly original textures and ear-worm-worthy melodies shine with sparkling clarity.
