West Australian Opera: Madama Butterfly
29 July @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm AWST

Moffatt Oxenbould’s much-loved staging of Puccini’s classic was retired by Opera Australia back in 2017. Fans will therefore be delighted to see it pop up eight years later in Perth, revived by Matthew Barclay. “It’s cleverly conceived by Oxenbould and his design team as an exotic, seductive world as seen through Pinkerton’s eyes,” wrote Jo Litson for Limelight. Christopher Van Tuinen conducts a cast that stars Mariana Hong as the ill-fated Cio-Cio-San with Paul O’Neill as Pinkerton, the thoughtless adventurer who breaks her heart. Samuel Dundas sings the US consul Sharpless with Fleuranne Brockway as Butterfly’s trusty servant Suzuki.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
One of the world’s best-loved, most-performed operas returns to His Majesty’s Theatre for the first time in a decade.
Puccini’s beautiful and powerful opera shatters the hearts of its audience with its devastating story of betrayal set against the backdrop of 1904 Nagasaki, Japan.
The American, Lieutenant Pinkerton, marries young geisha Cio-Cio-San, and she believes his love is true. After Pinkerton returns to the United States, she bears a son and waits faithfully for his return. What follows remains one of opera’s most tragic stories.
Witness the exquisite Moffatt Oxenbould production of this powerhouse opera set to transport you to another world and break your heart.
