Melbourne Opera: Samson & Delilah
1 June @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm AEST

It’s hard to believe, but Saint-Saëns struggled for decades to find companies willing to stage what is now considered his operatic masterpiece. In a series of epic choral scenes and intimate love duets, the composer tells the Biblical tale of Samson, the mighty Israelite, brought low by the treachery (and razor-sharp scissors) of the sultry Philistine Delilah. Melbourne Opera’s new production, directed by Suzanne Chaundy and conducted by Raymond Lawrence, stars Deborah Humble in her role debut as Delilah (see 5 Questions on page 65) and Rosario La Spina as her hapless victim.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
One of the greatest of French operas, Saint-Saëns’ Samson and Delilah powerfully tells the story of the seduction and downfall of Samson. Delilah is one of the greatest mezzo roles in the repertoire and Melbourne Opera is thrilled to present Australian international star Deborah Humble in her role debut. Rosario La Spina appears as Samson in a new production directed by Suzanne Chaundy and conducted by Raymond Lawrence. Sung in French with English subtitles.
