Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Sheku Kanneh-Mason plays Finnis

8 August @ 2:00 pm - 4:10 pm AEST

Event Series (See All)

Experience the versatile skill and boundary-spanning musicality of Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the knock-out British cellist who won the BBC Young Musician competition and played at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding. Still in his 20s but deep in his performance career, Kanneh-Mason will be the first soloist in Australia to play Edmund Finnis’ Cello Concerto, and you’ll be among the first in the country to hear it.

Chief Conductor Jaime Martín will lead this performance of MSO co-commissioned music. He’ll also conjure the glistening world of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. It’s an impressionistic piece that tells the tale of a mythical forest creature who feels torn between reality and his dreams. In contrast, Tchaikovsky’s decisive Symphony No.5 will leave you firmly grounded in the human experience as it travels through those universal experiences of challenge and triumph.
