Sydney Festival: Soliloquy
17 January @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEDT
Now, here’s a unique festival experience. In Soliloquy, Melbourne recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey undertakes a radical re-invention of the solo recital, subverting the hierarchy of traditional concert music presentation by inviting 32 untrained dance participants to share a stage with a musician and a professional contemporary dancer (a thrilling rare performance from Stephanie Lake).
This chorus of the untrained will create a performance around Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann’s Twelve Fantasias for Solo Flute. Working to simple directions – Soliloquy is all about listening – they become a living part of the music, makers of a unique and enthralling ritual unlike anything you will have experienced before.
Created by Lacey with director-choreographer Gideon Obarzanek (One Infinity, Sydney Festival 2019) and dancer Lake (Manifesto, Sydney Festival 2023), lighting designer Niklas Pajanti and costume designer Harriet Oxley, Soliloquy urges us to reimagine our relationship to the past, to one another and to music itself.
