Sydney Festival: Switched On – Courtney Barnett’s End of the Day
20 January @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEDT
One of Australia’s most beloved and acclaimed singer-songwriters gives a special two-part performance. First, the arrival of a gorgeous new chapter from Barnett with the release of her instrumental album, End of the Day (music from the film Anonymous Club), performed and improvised with collaborator Stella Mozgawa. Then, Barnett sings treasured tracks from her incomparable back catalogue.
Comprised of 17 improvisations originally recorded in 2021 as part of the score to the film Anonymous Club, Barnett returned to these tracks a year later, remixing, re-recording and reframing them into a seamless meditative collage which would subsequently become the End of the Day record. Meditative, slow-burning and beautiful, End of the Day prioritizes atmosphere, tone and texture over traditional song structures and melodic hooks. It’s a fearless and stunning turn for an artist who built her formidable reputation through profound lyricism and riff-based fireworks.
