National Theatre (UK): The Lehman Trilogy
16 March @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm AEDT
Following acclaimed seasons at London’s National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway, the epic play by Stefano Massini, adapted by Ben Power, makes its Australian premiere in an exclusive Sydney season. Beginning in 1844, The Lehman Trilogy traces the story of the powerful banking family, whose firm went bankrupt in 2008, triggering the largest financial crisis in history. The drama unfolds over three parts on a single evening (running three and a half hours). Directed by Sam Mendes, three actors play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons. In a five-star review of the Broadway production, Limelight praised its “thrillingly ambitious, virtuosic staging” and said, “As storytelling, The Lehman Trilogy is hard to beat.”
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Written by Stefano Massini, adapted by Ben Power, and directed by multi-award-winning director Sam Mendes, with set design by Es Devlin, The Lehman Trilogy features a cast of three playing the Lehman brothers, their sons and grandsons, in an extraordinary feat of storytelling told in three parts on a single evening. Hailed by The New York Times as ‘a genuinely epic production’ The Lehman Trilogy is the story of a family and a company that changed the world.
On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.
