State Opera South Australia: The Marriage of Figaro
21 November 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm ACDT
Mozart and Da Ponte’s adaptation of the Beaumarchais play has stood the test of time for a reason: it’s one of the most perfectly constructed music dramas ever. Nicholas Cannon’s mainstage directorial debut features a contemporary take on this classic comedy of men behaving badly. Jeremy Kleeman is Figaro, the canny servant who hopes to turn the tables on his predatory master, sung here by Nicholas Lester. Jessica Dean is Figaro’s intended, Susanna, Petah Cavallaro is the count’s neglected wife, and Emily Edmonds sings Cherubino, a young man struggling to keep it in his pants. Tobias Ringborg conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Figaro and Susanna are getting married, but their walk down the aisle is paved with drama. Figaro’s boss is out to bed the bride-to-be while his heartbroken wife finds herself the object of a forbidden adolescent passion and, to top it all off, a debt needs to be repaid or the couple won’t make it to the altar!
Long before Bridgerton and Bridget Jones’s Diary, Mozart gave the world a musical rom-com with this joyous story where mistaken identity, cheating scandals and forbidden secrets burst at the seams with invention and wit. The sublime music fizzes along with comic high spirits conveying all the delight and pain of love, and the agony and ecstasy of desire.
A sumptuous interpretation of the classic tale is catapulted into modern times with a series of instantly recognisable characters and chaotic situations. Save the date for a funny, scandalous and romantic night at the opera.
