The West Australian Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of Jenna Smith as its Principal Trumpet. Smith is breaking a brass ceiling as the first female musician to hold the position in WASO’s almost 100-year history. “I’m really looking forward to implementing my artistic vision for the trumpet section and brass section as a whole,” she said. “The WASO brass section is my adopted family and it’s a joy to work alongside these fabulous musicians every day.”

In other brass news, Sydney Symphony Orchestra has appointed UK-born Sam Jacobs as its new Principal Horn. Jacobs previously held the post at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
The architect, gallerist and multicultural engagement specialist Simon Chan has been appointed to Sydney Festival’s Board of Directors. Chan has served on numerous boards and advisory committees, including as Chair of the Art Gallery of NSW’s VisAsia Committee. His appointment comes as Sydney Festival prepares for its 50th anniversary in 2026 under recently appointed Festival Director Kris Nelson.
