A newly published survey conducted by the Berlin-based company Goldmedia on behalf of APRA AMCOS has shed light on the growing influence of AI in music creation and its economic implications. It also raises concerns about profound impacts it could have on music makers – especially First Nations creators.

The study collates information gathered from an online survey of APRA AMCOS members conducted between 31 May and 20 June 2024. A total of 4,274 songwriters, composers, and publishers participated in the survey.
Two additional surveys were conducted to explore the impact of AI on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians (38 participants) as well as Māori musicians (53 participants). The study also included input from a smaller number of academics, AI software builders and music sector stakeholders.
Given that other jurisdictions in Europe and North and South America are already further advanced than Australia and New Zealand in terms of regulation, it’s high time consideration be given to the pros and cons of our inevitable embrace of generative AI says Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS.
