The Federal Government is set to introduce new legislation which will set quotas for Australian content on streaming platforms with over 1 million users.

The new legislation would require platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ to commit either 10 percent of their total Australian expenditure, or 7.5 percent of its total Australian revenue to producing new Australian drama, documentary, arts, educational or children’s programs.

Streaming services will now be subject to the requirements applied to commercial and subscription-based television services in Australia – the Australian Content Test Standards. These also ensure that some post-production work – including editing and music creation – is carried out within Australia.

Intended to be enforced last year, the decision to mandate Australian content has been delayed in part due to concerns over how it would impact the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement and possible retalitory tariffs from the Trump administration.

Peak music body APRA AMCOS has commended the announcement, calling it “a win for the screen industry” and Australian screen composers.
