The BBC has announced that it will cease all forms of traditional television and radio broadcasting by 2035, transitioning to a fully online platform. BBC Director-General Tim Davie confirmed the move last week in a broader address.

“We believe the BBC can play a vital role in helping to support audiences to transition to digital in a way that’s fair and equitable, where access is guaranteed and no one is left behind,” he said.
“We need to own digital switchover, not get dragged, and proactively shaped the future.We think now is the time to confirm an IP switchover, in the 2030s, setting out the conditions and providing certainty to ensure access and success. There are huge benefits, financially and socially, and we want to play our part.”
As a part of the pivot to online, Davie said that the BBC will “double down” on Freely, a free-to air internet-based television service co-launched by the BBC in 2024, as well as a streaming media device with a simple user interface.
