The National Advocates for Arts Education (NAAE) has issued an appeal to the Australian National University (ANU) to reconsider proposed changes to its School of Music, warning the restructure could have a lasting impact on Australia’s cultural and educational future.

In an open letter addressed to ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Genevieve Bell, NAAE Chair Dr John Nicholas Saunders described the proposed changes – which may involve significant staff reductions and a narrowing of artistic and academic offerings – as “deeply concerning”.

“We are writing to express our deep concern regarding the proposed ‘reorganisation’ of the Australian National University’s School of Music, which we understand may involve significant reductions to staff and a narrowing of the School’s academic and artistic offerings,” Saunders wrote.

“Such changes would not only undermine the School’s proud legacy but would also diminish ANU’s vital national role as a custodian of artistic and educational excellence.”
