Having been rumoured for some weeks, OA has today confirmed that Italian conductor Andrea Battistoni will take up the role of Music Director from January 2026.

Also announced are joining incoming Board Chair Professor Glyn Davis and Chief Executive Officer Alex Budd.

Yet to be finalised, however, is the search for the company’s new Artistic Director. The role has now been vacant for a year, since the sudden departure of Jo Davies in August 2024.

Outgoing Chair Rod Sims described Battistoni’s appointment as “a thrilling and essential development in the rebuilding of the company’s artistic leadership,” noting that the company was now on “a sustainable footing” after several challenging years.

Opera Australia’s recently released annual report revealed a $10.1 million deficit for 2024.

“The past 12 months have seen a significant financial recovery and performances that are critically acclaimed and selling to full houses, and the 2026 program has been well received, said Sims. Opera Australia is now on a sustainable footing and with strengthened leadership is well placed for a vibrant future.”
