An afternoon opera sing-along didn’t quite go to plan for one enthusiastic opera fan in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam police mistakenly kicked in the door of a local singer after nearby neighbours called in reports of hearing “terrifying screams” from a house in the Zuid-Buitenveldert district of the Dutch city. Authorities believed they were responding to a domestic violence call after a concerned neighbour said they’d heard “a frightening scream” from the apartment.

Upon arriving at the house the police heard what they too believed to be screams of agony, and knocked on the door. Receiving no response, and believing an act of bodily harm was in progress, they kicked in the door only to find a man trying to sing along with an opera recording. The man was wearing headphones and was so absorbed in his sing-along he did not hear the police’s initial knocks.

“In the end, the police, the tipster and the resident had a real laugh about the incident,” the Amsterdam Police said.

Unfortunately, Limelight were unable to obtain details of what that man was attempting to sing, and there’s no word as to whether the man has taken up singing lessons since.
