Opera Queensland to perform Philip Glass’ latest at next year’s Brisbane Festival.

The life of Walt Disney and the music of Philip Glass is set to converge in Opera Queensland’s headline event for 2014, The Perfect American.

With previous performances in London and Madrid, the production will be performed in its southern hemisphere premiere at the Brisbane Festival next September.

“I hope audiences will seize this rare opportunity to experience Philip Glass’ latest work and see something truly out of the ordinary,” festival director Noel Staunton said.

The Queensland Opera company’s 2014 season, announced Monday night, also includes a contemporary take on Verdi’s Rigoletto, directed by Lindy Hume and set in modern-day Italy.

Award-winning theatre director Craig Ilott (Smoke & Mirrors) will bring to life a new production of La bohème featuring Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Richard Gill in his own chamber orchestration.

The company is also set to join forces with Townsville dance company Dancenorth and classical accordion virtuoso James Crabb in ABANDON – an experimental new work uniting contemporary dance with baroque music.
