In a social media post, Opera Australia said the company was “deeply saddened” to share the news of the passing of Adele Johnston, a much-loved member of the OA Chorus from 2001 to 2012. “Her contribution to the life and spirit of the company over that time was immeasurable.”
Most recently, Adele made a guest appearance performing the roles of the Abbess and Zita in Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, respectively, in OA’s 2024 season of Il trittico.
Johnston, Limelight understands, died unexpectedly, aged 66.

“Adele was a generous, supportive, and professional colleague,” said Opera Australia. “She brought not only vocal and dramatic skill to her work, but also warmth, humour and unwavering dedication.”
“She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of working with her. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and the many colleagues who will feel this loss deeply.”
Born in Sydney, Johnson commenced her performing career in theatre and musicals in the early 1980s, prior to being awarded Runner-Up in the Melbourne Herald Sun Aria competition in 1991, and winning the Mietta’s Song Recital Award in 1997, which enabled her classical studies overseas.
