Event Series Event Series: Elgar’s Violin Concerto

West Australian Symphony Orchestra: Elgar’s Violin Concerto

26 April @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AWST

Acclaimed British conductor Alpesh Chauhan leads a program that couples Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12 with the Violin Concerto in B minor by Elgar, who took 15 bows when he conducted its world premiere in 1910. Dedicated to Fritz Kreisler, the father of modern-day violin playing, the concerto is performed here by WASO Concertmaster Laurence Jackson. Elgar is very much the man of the moment, with several performances of his Enigma Variations in Australia this year (see our article on page 14).

Limelight Editor’s Choice

Celebrated British conductor Alpesh Chauhan and WASO’s beloved Concertmaster Laurence Jackson are a match made in heaven for this evening of extraordinary music.

Jackson brings poise and passion to the noble eloquence and poetic beauty of Elgar’s autumnal masterpiece – the greatest of all English violin concertos.

Then Chauhan leads WASO’s first performance of Shostakovich’s Twelfth Symphony, a dramatic work that is vivid, urgent and hugely powerful.
