Opera Australia: Gilbert & Sullivan – A Musical Celebration
24 May @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm AEST

The national opera company showcases its proud history with a gala concert. Arias and ensembles from 10 of the world’s most popular operas – think Verdi, Bizet, Puccini – are complemented by slices of Benjamin Britten, whose works were once a core component of OA’s repertoire. There’s a special focus too on Mozart, whose operas comprised the company’s entire repertoire during its inaugural season. Giampaolo Bisanti conducts Orchestra Victoria, while Stuart Maunder directs a cast that includes Stacey Alleaume, Emma Matthews, Celeste Lazarenko, Luke Gabbedy, David Parkin and Diego Torre. Maunder also directs Gilbert & Sullivan: A Musical Celebration in Melbourne, 22–24 May.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Mischievous humour meets soaring melodies — a sparkling evening of operatic wit, whimsy and unforgettable song.
From not-so-fearsome pirates with a flair for melody, to bewigged Lords of the House tangled in mischief, to lovelorn tailors in an imagined, topsy-turvy Japan. Take a seat, suspend disbelief, and prepare to laugh.
Few composer-librettist teams have had the impact of Gilbert and Sullivan. Their mega-hits are still packing out theatres today and have become part of our pop culture lexicon (thanks, The Simpsons!).
Take a ride through their greatest musical moments in this concert directed by Gilbert & Sullivan aficionado Stuart Maunder.
