Australian National Academy of Music: In Sibelius’s Shadow
5 June @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm AEST

Beleura House and Garden, a stunning 19th-century house on the Mornington Peninsula, is renowned for its breathtaking gardens and custom-built performance space. Here, ANAM brings you an exceptional chamber music experience, featuring both ANAM musicians and faculty members.
Anchoring the program is Voces Intimae, Sibelius’s String Quartet in D minor recognised as the only major work for string quartet ofthe Finnish composer’s mature period. Sibelius wrote about his work in a letter to his wife: ‘It turned out as something wonderful. The kind of thing that brings a smile to your lips at the hour of death. I will say no more.’
The concert also features Einar Englund’s Arioso Interrotto and Kalevi Aho’s Quintet, offering audiences a continuing journey through Finnish soundscapes. Under the direction of Paavali Jumppanen, ANAM Artistic Director, ANAM musicians will tune into the deeper currents of humanity, inviting the audience to do the same, and revealing music as far more than mere entertainment.
