Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s fairy-tale musical is among the composer’s best-loved works. Intricately interweaving famous stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel, the show turns on its head in the second act when it asks what happens after ‘happily ever after’ and how do we cope if we have to tell our own stories? Directed by Patrick Nolan, this co-production between OQ and QTC stars Amy Lehpamer as the Baker’s Wife, Justin Smith as the Baker, Ali McGregor as the Witch and Kanen Breen as Narrator, Mysterious Man and Granny (you have been warned!). James Dobinson conducts the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

This one’s for the fans, friends and family of the fans, and a whole new generation of musical theatre lovers.

In 2026, Opera Queensland and Queensland Theatre Company combine to conjure a bold new production of Into the Woods — Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning musical that’s anything but a fairy tale.

Imagine if you could get what you wished for? Cinderella, Jack, Little Red and Rapunzel all got what they wanted … and inside a storybook ending to boot! But in this tangled forest, every wish has a price. Magic and music spiral into a wild, witty and deeply human reckoning with desire, consequence and the stories we tell ourselves.

With a dazzling score, a cast of unforgettable characters, and a plot that refuses to play nice, Into the Woods will show you what lies beyond happily ever after… if you dare to look.
