Music at the Basilica: Laughter and Tears
3 October @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

”I can’t say whether one should laugh or cry. Perhaps both at the same time”, Debussy wrote in a letter about his Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp. This major work was written in the later stages of his life, while he was struggling with terminal cancer during World War I, and is the cornerstone of this program.
The combination of these three instruments creates a dreamscape of emotional ambiguity with a quintessentially Impressionistic tone colour of dark, light and all of the blurriness in between. For Brighid Mantelli, the opportunity to perform this work with her son Edmund Mantelli and also Laura Tanata is a career highlight. Together with the Ravel and Leo Smit Trios, this program promises to take the listener on an emotional journey and bathe them in gorgeous, shimmering, lush sound.
