Number Junky: Masterclass @ ANU
4 November @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm AEDT

In the 90-minute masterclass/workshop, members of Number Junky share their approach to performing, composing and improvising in odd meter. Drawing on the trio’s original repertoire and extensive experience working with irregular meter, the session explores how odd meter can become a natural and expressive part of music-making.
The session will include live performance demonstrations, discussion of selected works from Number Junky’s repertoire, and practical exercises designed to help participants develop confidence with irregular rhythmic structures. Topics may include:
Hearing and feeling odd meter beyond counting.
Approaches to groove, phrasing and ensemble interaction.
How rhythmic groupings can inspire melodic and compositional ideas.
Strategies for improvising in asymmetrical meters.
Practice techniques for developing rhythmic fluency.
Opportunities for participant involvement and discussion.
Suitable for musicians, composers and improvisers of all backgrounds, this masterclass offers insight into Number Junky’s creative process while providing practical tools that participants can apply to their own music-making.
