In the late 19th century, Italian opera faced something of a crisis. It’s greatest composer, Giuseppe Verdi, was now in his 60’s and so the search was on to find the next great Italian opera composer. Several candidates presented themselves. Today we might think Giacomo Puccini was the obvious candidate – with operas like La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Turandot which all remain immensely popular – but, at the time, the matter was not so clear cut.
