This intriguing program, curated by Guest Director Jane Sheldon, takes its name from the natural phenomenon where a desert produces carpets of flowers as a result of an unusual spell of rain. The concert explores parallels between the austere beauty of the dry desert and the lush abundance brought on by a wet season. The music ranges from medieval and Renaissance giants Hildegard von Bingen and Carlo Gesualdo to contemporary composers Katherine Balch, Rebecca Saunders, James Weeks and Michael Whiticker. In addition, Sheldon, a composer as well as a soprano, has written a new work for the company.
