Event Series: Swansong

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra: Swansong

3 July @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm ACST

Flautist Kim Falconer and harpist Jessica Fotinos feature in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, written on commission in 1778 during the composer’s fated trip to Paris with his mother, Anna Maria, who died there. The concert begins with Sibelius’s tone poem The Swan of Tuonela, composed in 1893, while Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique rounds out the program. Completed shortly before his death in 1893, it was his final completed symphony. Otto Tausk conducts.

Limelight Editor’s Choice

Inspired by poetry and prayer, Arvo Pärt’s Swansong opens the program with a spacious, meditative stillness. Tchaikovsky’s deeply personal Symphony No.6 Pathétique closes it – his final completed work, imbued with impassioned beauty and a sense of farewell. Mozart’s sparkling concerto offers a delicate contrast with its ethereal blend of flute and harp, their solo voices weaving together with the warmth and intimacy of old friends.
