Fresh from a sell-out Asia tour, The Awakenings Ensemble returns to Perth for one night only at Freo.Social, Fremantle.

The Asia tour delivered beyond expectations. Both Singapore nights sold out. Beijing and Shanghai were full houses. The ensemble performed at Blue Note Beijing, JZ Club Shanghai, Salon No.10 Hong Kong and Blu Jaz Singapore – and was immediately invited to return to the JZ Festival in Shanghai. A live recording made during the tour is being prepared for release as an album later this year.

Five musicians from Australia, Iran and Lebanon performing original music that weaves Persian and Middle Eastern instruments – ney, daff, oud – with contemporary jazz. Founded by Perth drummer and pianist Michael Pignéguy in 2011, the ensemble has built a reputation for performances that are as musically rigorous as they are accessible.
