“Toot your Trombone, brave soul… and you may yet become the Trombone Champ.”

The grim, high fantasy introduction to the video game Trombone Champ does little to prepare you for the reality of trying to control your trombone slide as you honk out a drunken approximation of Johann Strauss II’s ‘Blue Danube’ waltz, while words on the screen decry your efforts as “MEH” or “NASTY”.

Just like a real trombone, you have to find the perfect slide position for each note if you want it to be in tune (or even close to the right note) and just like in real life, if you hold a note too long you’ll run out of breath. But despite the challenges, Trombone Champ is blowing up online.
