You’ve played with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra since 2003. Do you think you will ever return to Australia to live?
Haha! That question has rotated in my mind for the past 25 years. I left for a sea change, and Scandinavia resonated with me, in part because it was closer geographically to my family’s ancestral birthplace in Hungary. The social fabric of the region – a less competitive, more neutral space around shared community – appealed to me. Luckily, I landed a position quickly in an orchestra, which over the past decade has transformed into a top-tier European orchestra.
Returning home always sparks an extra energetic lift and I miss the Australian landscape [and] the well-integrated, open arts scene. I still have family and good friends in Oz, and I keep in touch with Australian contemporary art practice, notably through Limelight’s constant finger on the pulse. Thank you! I am always keen to give back to the next generation. Over the years, AWO has offered such opportunities, and I happily continue to throw my hand up.
