The Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) has received $150,000 from the Northern Territory Government over three years to support the future development of the Darwin Youth Orchestra (DYO).

DSO is working with the Centre for Youth and Community Music (CYCM) and other music education partners to develop the next phase of the youth orchestra, with DSO providing artistic leadership while transition and administrative arrangements are established with CYCM.

The initiative aims to create a sustainable youth orchestra that complements existing music education programs and provides young Territorians with a pathway into orchestral performance.

Planning is underway for the DYO’s artistic model, staffing, rehearsal and performance structure, enrolments and auditions. Details of the 2027 program, including enrolment, audition and commencement dates, are expected to be announced in early 2027.

DSO General Manager Paul Christ said the orchestra would build on existing music education opportunities in Darwin while providing young musicians with further ensemble and orchestral experience.

“The DYO will build on the excellent music education already happening across Darwin and create clearer pathways into future orchestral opportunities, including with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra,” he said.

“It will give young musicians opportunities to develop their ensemble skills, broaden their orchestral experience and see a clear next step in their musical development here in the Territory.”
