Donne, Women in Music has released a new report delving into the programming of the 2024 BBC Proms. The organisation takes the reins from the Independent Society of Musicians, which analysed the 2023 Proms season and is a supporter of this report.

The report has also introduced a brand-new metric that is set to feature in all of its reports moving forward – the time of works performed.
“While it is vital to highlight the positive strides made towards gender and racial diversity, we must also raise awareness of how diversity needs to be given equal time on stage for audiences to truly appreciate these works,” the report said.
Over its eight-week season, the 2024 BBC Proms comprised 574 works over 89 concerts – 7,193 minutes of music. Almost half (47 percent) of concerts featured at least one work by a female composer, though only 13.5 percent of full-length works were composed by women. Only 8.6 percent of the runtime was taken up by female-composed works.
