Richard Jones’s much debated production of Strauss’s masterpiece is free to watch online.

The Glyndebourne Festival’s current production of Der Rosenkavalier can now be watched online for free.

Available courtesy of Arte Online – France and Germany’s shared arts broadcaster – Richard Jones directs a star-studded cast including Kate Royal as the Marschallin, Tara Erraught as Octavian and Lars Woldt in the role of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is led by the festival’s newly appointed music director, Robin Ticciati.

Last month, the production was the cause of a media furore after five senior British critics made adverse comments regarding the physical appearance of Tara Erraught in the trouser-role of Octavian.

Sparking outrage in the opera community, the personal remarks labelled the Irish mezzo-soprano as “dumpy in stature”, “stocky”, “unappealing” and “unsightly”. The offending critics included Rupert Christiansen in The Telegraph, Andrew Clements in The Guardian and Richard Morrison in The Times, some of whom have since issued apologies. Despite this controversy, the production has been earning warm reviews, including a favourable assessment from Limelight. Read the review here.
