An unusual cover this month. You may need a few seconds to work out exactly what it is you’re looking at – or, more accurately, into.

Several covers of Limelight's August 2023 issue are displayed diagonally across a surface. The cover image shows the inside view of a violin.

It’s just one of a series of entrancing images created by Charles Brooks, a cellist-turned-artist who has been photographing the insides of violins, cellos, pianos and wind instruments since 2021. In this month’s Limelight, we talk with Brooks about a COVID-19 lockdown project that went viral, and about the secrets a tiny camera can reveal in a centuries-old instrument.

We’ve also scored an interview with the great tenor Jonas Kaufmann ahead of his performances as Enzo Grimaldo in La Gioconda for Opera Australia. Speaking to Jansson J. Antmann, a back-in-the-swing Kaufmann, hot on the heels of acclaimed performances at La Scala and Covent Garden, digs into his highly anticipated role debut.

Limelight Editor Jo Litson talks to the creatives behind The Dismissal, the vastly entertaining and insightful musical based on events and personalities involved in the sacking of Gough Whitlam in 1975.
