The Tasmanian Theatre Awards will be presented at a live ceremony on 5 March. The Theatre Council of Tasmania, which organises them, has announced that Robert Jarman, one of Tasmania’s most accomplished and respected theatre artists, will be honoured on the night with the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jarman, whose career in Tasmania spans 30 years, is a director, actor, writer, dramaturg, teacher and occasional designer. He is also a theatre reviewer.

Born in Sydney, he studied English and Drama at the University of Sydney, where he was involved with the Sydney University Dramatic Society (SUDS), performing, writing and directing shows in a wide range of style from Shakespeare to experimental political cabaret.

In the late 1980s, he moved to Hobart where he quickly established himself as a leading member of the Tasmanian arts industry and a champion of Australian work.

Over the years, he has directed more than 80 productions. These include the world premiere productions of 23 new Australian works, 12 new Australian music-theatre works, five new Australian dance/physical theatre works and five new festival comedy shows.
