The actor and singer Jane Birkin has died. She was 76.

Writing on Twitter,  Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo paid tribute to an Englishwoman who became one of the city’s most loved adoptees: “The most Parisian of the English has left us … We will never forget her songs, her laughs and her incomparable accent.”

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr wrote: “R.I.P Jane Birkin. Playing on her album Fictions in 2006 was a lovely experience. A sweet and kind person with a heart for art.”

“Very sad to hear about Jane Birkin dying,” wrote Alex Kapranos, frontman of the Scottish band Franz Ferdinand. “She was a true icon, but also charming sensitive and funny. To be able to perform and record with her was a total honour. I last saw her perform at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris a year ago and she was still as magical as ever.”

Tributes will continue to flow for Birkin, who featured in dozens of films and released 13 studio albums during a career somewhat overshadowed by her vocal duet with Serge Gainsbourg on his song Je t’aime… moi...
