Limelight notes the death, on 22 August, of Alan Bonds, the distinguished Western Australian violinist, violist, composer, conductor and music educator whose teaching shaped generations of young musicians. He was 77.

A formative figure in Western Australia’s classical music community for more than four decades, Bonds combined a career as a performer and educator with an enduring commitment to chamber music, composition and the development of young musicians.

WA-born, Bonds made an early impression as a violinist while studying at the University of Western Australia. As a second-year student he won the position of Concertmaster of the Australian Youth Orchestra, leading the ensemble on its inaugural tour of Japan in 1970. He also studied composition at UWA and was awarded the J Hodges Composition Prize in his third year.

After graduating with First Class Honours in 1973, he continued his studies in Britain, where he performed professionally before returning to Australia. In the 1980s he embarked on a long association with chamber music and music education in Western Australia.
