More than 6,000 residents, workers and visitors have signed an open letter urging the Victorian Government to commit funding to the restoration and revitalisation of South Melbourne Town Hall, warning that the landmark building risks permanent decline without urgent intervention.
The letter, delivered this week to the Treasurer, the Minister for Creative Industries, and the local Member for Albert Park, calls on the state to join a major cross-sector effort to save the historic but currently derelict civic building.
Spearheaded by the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), the proposed $100 million-plus redevelopment would transform the hall into a vibrant hub for music, community events, education, and the arts.

Federal and local government support is already locked in, with the Albanese Government committing $25 million and Port Phillip Council contributing $35 million. ANAM has pledged $29 million of its own funds – an unusually large investment for a not-for-profit – and is now seeking $12.5 million from the Victorian Government to complete the package.
