As a company, Phantom Limbs have always been interested in neurological research and writings as a starting point for creating dance. Previous works ‘Ganzfeld Frequency’ and ‘The Memory Progressive’ were created from research into the Ganzfeld experiments in telepathy and the condition of antegrade and retrograde amnesia. Our newest work Dreamlogic looks at the subconscious mind and its role in decision-making, the concept of the ‘shadow self’ and scientific research suggesting that the boundaries between people may in fact, be liquid.

In particular the work of physicist Leonard Mlodinow has been a great inspiration for Dreamlogic in the creating of movement phrases and structuring of the work. Even the set and sound design draw from this source.

Mlodinow talks about subconscious decision-making; ‘you’re choosing but you don’t know how’. He presents one group with a picture of a hotel room, he asks if it is worth five thousand dollars a night and then asks them to write how much they think it is worth. He shows the exact same picture of the hotel to a second group, he asks if it is worth fifty-five dollars a night and then asks the second group how much they think it is worth. When...
