The inspiration for programming Divine Alchemy originated from selecting music that expressed either loss or trauma. Embraced by composers, emotional reactions to such experiences range across heartfelt, haunting and deeply emotive music.

Created by Artistic Director, Tania Frazer, the program included inspirational classic works alongside exciting new pieces. It proved a judicious mix. The concert was a delightful afternoon of glorious chamber music, well-crafted and lovingly assembled with the high quality of musicianship we have come to expect from Southern Cross Soloists (SXS).

The concert commenced with Bach’s ravishingly beautiful Oboe Concerto in G minor, with Frazer the soloist. Comprising seven players (the harpsichord accompanying a string quintet and solo oboe), the work got off to a brisk, bright start in the Allegro movement with fine oboe trills rising gently over the strings.

The second slow moment, Larghetto, considered to be one of Bach’s finest musical creations, is rightly lauded for its haunting melody. Frazer played this beautifully, her sustained long notes offering a sweet sonority with fine arpeggios.
