A few years ago, I had the pleasure of conducting a series of interviews with women in Melbourne who are jazz and improvisation musicians. During these conversations, it became apparent that this lively, talented cohort is drawing on a high standard of education in jazz and improvisation to create music that is pushing genre boundaries and invigorating the local scene in exciting and original directions.

The Great Reset is thus an apt name for a new collaboration between Sunny Kim, Helen Svoboda and Joanna Duda, visiting from Poland for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF). The trio’s impressive performance at the lovely venue Chapel Off Chapel in Melbourne’s Prahran exemplifies the excellence that can result when assured and accomplished musicians come together to experiment across their strengths.

Kim and Svoboda are both Australia-based and gaining international reputations for their music, the former as a vocalist, composer and improviser, and the latter for her extraordinary talent as a double bassist and composer.
